2016–2017 Data Exchanges for HEDS Member Institutions
HEDS institutions share confidential and publicly available information for the work of the consortium and their own improvement efforts. Collaborative sharing as well as making sense of and using data, including confidential and institutionally sensitive data, are essential components of the consortium's work.
In early September, we will send out a survey that asks primary contacts which institutional data exchanges their institution will participate in this year.
Member institutions submit the institutional data listed in the table below to the HEDS staff, who then compiles the data and creates Microsoft Excel files that allow for quick customized comparisons. Data will be most useful to HEDS institutions if it is submitted by the target dates listed.
|HEDS Institutional Data Exchange||Target Date for Data Submission||Time Period When Institutions May Submit Data||How to Submit Data|
|Common Data Set||November 30||November 1 – March 1||Email same Excel file submitted to CDS to Michelle Spencer|
|AAUP Faculty Compensation||January 15||December 15 – March 1||Email same Excel file submitted to AAUP to Michelle Spencer|
|HEDS Starting Salaries||December 30||December 1 – February 1||Qualtrics survey|
|NACUBO Tuition Discounting Study||As early in January as possible||December 15 – March 1||Qualtrics survey|
|HEDS Actionable Applications||One week after your institution's application deadline||January 1 – June 1||Qualtrics survey|
|HEDS Tuition and Fees||March 1||January 1 – June 1||Qualtrics survey|
|HEDS Deposits||One week after your institution's deposit deadline||May 1 – July 1||Qualtrics survey|
We begin sharing data from the institutional data exchanges once we have information from 10 institutions, and we update our data files weekly as institutions submit their data. We send final versions of the files out soon after each data collection period has ended.
HEDS member institutions also have the option of sharing individual- and institution-level data from surveys administered by the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research (CPR), the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP), and the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI).
| ||Collection Years||Interactive comparison file provided||Individual-level data file provided|
|CIRP Freshman Survey (TFS)||Collected every three years, next in 2018–2019||✓||✓|
|HERI Faculty Survey||Collected every three years, next in 2017–2018||✓||✓|
|National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)||Collected every year||✓||✓|
For HEDS institutions that wish to share data from these surveys, the HEDS staff will collect data directly from CPR for NSSE. For the CIRP and HERI surveys, we will collect data files from institutions. We will contact member institutions in fall 2016 about the upcoming NSSE data exchange.
Publicly-Available Institutional Data Sets
We download and format data from public sources and share them with all member institutions in Microsoft Excel files that allow for quick customized comparisons. These comparison files include the following:
- Baccalaureate Origins of Doctorates – contains overall and discipline-specific data from the WebCASPAR database on the proportion of students that go on to receive PhDs for both public and private institutions. We update this information every three years. The next update will be in 2016-2017.
- IPEDS – contains data from the IPEDS Data Center for the universe of U.S. higher education institutions. We distribute three IPEDS data files between July and January based on IPEDS's update schedule.
Please contact Michelle Spencer (765-361-6492) if you have questions about the institutional data exchanges or the publically-available institutional data sets. Contact Adrea Hernandez (765-361-6343) if you have questions about the non-HEDS surveys.
