COVID-19 Institutional Response Surveys

To assist institutions, we’ve created three surveys—one each for students, staff, and faculty— to help you gauge the impact of your institution’s response to COVID-19. The surveys all include questions about how members of your community have experienced your institution’s responses to COVID-19. The student and the faculty surveys both have an optional module that includes open-ended questions about experiences with teaching and learning in the online environment initiated by the crisis. The surveys usually take 5-10 minutes to complete and are optimized for mobile devices. Both the faculty and staff surveys are anonymous. The student survey is not anonymous to allow people at your institution to reach out to students who need help.

As of July 28, more than 42,300 students at 65 institutions have responded to the student survey. More than 6,300 staff members from 29 institutions have responded to the staff survey and about 4,200 faculty from 28 institutions have completed the faculty survey.

We will be revising our COVID-19 response surveys for fall to assist schools that are continuing with remote learning as well as those who are using hybrid or blended models and those who may have to switch back to remote learning depending on the course of the virus in their areas. Using these Surveys

Any college or university may use or adapt these surveys to meet their internal needs. There is no charge. If your institution does this, please let us know and please cite HEDS as the source of the survey by adding “© 2020 Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium” to the survey. We do not permit anyone to sell these surveys or to include the questions from these surveys in a product that you sell. We also do not allow for-profit entities or other organizations to use or adapt these surveys without our permission.

If it would be helpful, we can also administer these surveys for you. The benefit of having us administer the survey is that we take care of most of the work and you get reports with comparative data. We provide this service for free to institutions that belong to HEDS.

For institutions that do not belong to HEDS, we charge $750 to administer each of the surveys. We may need to charge large institutions additional fees depending on response rates. Please contact us to learn more.

We submitted all three surveys to the Wabash College Institutional Review Board (IRB) for review, and they were approved. The Wabash IRB letters are available here.

If You Want HEDS to Administer One or More of these Surveys

You can register for these surveys now. Please see the registration links at the bottom of this page.  Our original survey window for the student survey ended June 15th, but if the survey would be useful for your institution at this time you can register and/or contact Nicole Seidler ( or 765-361-6381). You can administer the faculty and staff surveys until July 31st.

For each survey:

  • You can choose a survey window length that fits your needs.
  • You can register now with tentative dates, and we can adjust as needed.
  • You can customize your survey with up to 10 supplemental questions.
  • We can administer the surveys for you in a variety of ways. We will discuss options with you after you register.
  • You will receive a link to a Qualtrics report (our survey engine) to view your incoming results in real-time.
  • We will send you a raw data file within three days of your survey closing.
  • We will create and send you a ready-to-share comparison report once all surveys have closed.
